Having fun in the kitchen is more than just cooking a meal. If you want to enjoy your kitchen experience as much as possible, you will need to experiment with some high tech gadgets. Learning how to cook new foods and meals means that you will be expanding your culinary horizons and you will be constantly learning new cooking techniques. By learning the kitchen basics, you will be able to quickly and easily prepare a meal for 3 people or 30.
Of course, kitchen gadgets make cooking easier. That is what they are designed to do, and most do it very well. There are high tech gadgets for nearly every task, and buying or even listing them all would be impossible. New gadgets are invented every day, and most of them are, in fact, extraneous. However, there are a few gadgets, both high-tech gadgets and low that you should never be without.
Glorious Gadgets and Where to Find Them
There is more than one way to find a kitchen gadget. While it is certainly tempting to walk through the mall and stop at every little kitchen supply store, the fact is that many of them are overpriced. The easiest way to find inexpensive cooking gadgets is to search online. Websites such as Epicurious.com© and FoodNetwork.com© provide a few ideas, and more off the wall websites such as Williams-Sonoma.com© provide even more. Whether you choose to buy online or in person, it is important to know a few things before you make the purchase.
Everything You Wanted to Know About Gadgets but were Afraid to Ask
Many people have a particular weakness for high-tech gadgets. Whether it is a high-tech gadget that extracts the seeds from an apple without having to peel it, or even one that is designed to cut up your hamburger or other ground meats into the smallest pieces possible, it is important to know that most kitchen gadgets have only a single purpose. Trying to find multiple uses for these gadgets is nearly impossible, and other than being wonderful conversation pieces, they have very little in the way of actual value in the kitchen.
What you should know is that unless a gadget has more than one function, or unless that single function is one you simply cannot live without, you should not buy it. One exception, of course, is the dishwasher. Dishwashers are not really kitchen gadgets, they are kitchen necessities; not because they make doing dishes easier, which of course they do not, but because they make sanitizing your cookware and dishes far easier. Simply put, if you cannot think of at least two things to do with it, do not buy it.
Automatic Salad Maker
The automatic salad maker, sometimes known as a Salad Shooter© is one of the most useful tools in the kitchen. While it is certainly true that the Salad Shooter© does not have nearly as many uses as, say, a blender, it is still a wildly useful tool. It is designed primarily to slice or process vegetables into useable sizes that you can use either for a salad or for other large meals. Where the salad shooter really comes into its own, though, is in grating cheese. With its rotary grating wheel and battery or electric-powered motor, it makes fast work of even several pounds of cheese that you may need if you are doing a large dinner party. Making lasagna or other baked pasta dishes is easily achieved in minimal time, and the Salad Shooter© can shred pounds of cheese in just a few minutes, saving both your arms and your expensive grater from getting clogged. It is dishwasher safe and the blades are very difficult to dull.
Ice Cream Maker
While it is certainly true that many households could benefit from having an ice-cream maker, they are more a luxury item than some other options. Ice cream makers are wonderful tools, though, if you are eating a healthy diet and want something sweet because they will also make frozen yogurt and sorbet with ease. Mix your healthy ingredients and place them in the ice cream maker, and in just a few minutes you’ll have a dessert that will satisfy your sweet tooth without adding inches to your waist. Of course, another of the most popular reasons to buy and use an ice-cream maker is that it makes spending time with your kids supremely easy. Children are drawn in by the idea of having ice cream, and you can control everything that goes into it. Using your own ice-cream maker is an inexpensive, low-hassle way of introducing fresh fruit to your children without hearing them constantly protest.
Food Vacuum Sealer
While it is not the newest kid on the block, having a vacuum food sealer in your kitchen will save you money. A vacuum food sealer is one of the kitchen gadgets that have a lot of practical use. Many high-tech gadgets do not provide as much utility as the food vacuum sealer, and as cooking gadgets go, it is relatively inexpensive. A food vacuum sealer allows you to buy large numbers of items in bulk, then vacuum seal them to seal in freshness and prevent spoilage. You can vacuum seal blocks of cheese or cereal. Nearly anything can be vacuum sealed, and one very smart way to use it is as a fast marinade-maker for fish or chicken. Make your marinade, place your chicken, steak, or fish into it, and then seal it up. The vacuum pressure will force the marinade into the meat in a fraction of the time it takes to marinate normally. Of course, you can also portion out pieces of salmon or other fish and drop the vacuum-sealed package into boiling water for a fast meal.
Regardless of which kitchen gadgets you think are indispensible, the fact is that many are easy to live without. Of course, if there is a kitchen gadget that can save you money, save time, or make life easier, it is always a smart buy. It is important, though, to remember that you have limited counter and cupboard space, and it may be better-used by other things.
